Various Typographies 2009-2012
2012
Graphic Design, Illustration, Typography
Various typographic projects over the years compiled to showcase the journey that has been undertaken, hits and misses but all part of a journey. Be it collectively or individually, we'd never 'arrive'. We live in constant transition. When we arrive, we die.
- Various Typographies
Between 2009-2012 - "Love the process"I share this with you, my triumphs and failures, my hits and misses but ultimately my progression over the years. Some are personal and client projects, some are rejected designs, but most a lesson in itself. A journey that has taken this humble typochondriac in his search for form and style. I say make mistakes, embrace failures, they are lessons in disguise. We all have to start somewhere, if not here and now then when?
In the beginning we would learn by copying, and I believe it is the best way to learn at first. Some innovations of our era comes from copying and refining it, even though if it had been done before it doesn't mean it was done well. I would implore that anyone never under estimate their own touch, I have been very unsure of my own skills and abilities and try to "gravitate" towards the people/works that I admire. Our backgrounds differ, our cultural past, our tastes, our inspirations in art and life, and so on. Two chefs cooking with the same recipe will not get the same tasting dish, if they put their heart and soul in it. Never under estimate your taste, and your story.
"In the journey to finding our own voice, we find ourselves"

Commissioned drop cap illustration for the Watercorp Print ad to promote the use of native Australian plant in people's garden which naturally suit the climate in Australia.
The ad tells a story with character names within it taken from native plant names. R for example is for Robyn Gordon which is a native Grevillea and also the main character in the story.

The theme for the 2013 Australian Poster Biennale is “A mother’s life is precious”.
Entrants are invited to be inspired and interpret this theme in any way they wish. Worldwide 287,000 mothers die each year. Over the timespan of the Australian Poster Biennale, that’s more than 500,000 mothers. The majority of these deaths happen in the developing world and happen because of inequalities in the standards and conditions of women’s lives. Improvements to reduce maternal deaths, and maternal health in general, can be made if all women were educated, families could earn fair and adequate incomes, communities had access to clean, safe water, access to healthy food, stable living conditions, reasonable standards of hygiene and easy access to basic health services.
The Australian Poster Biennale calls on designers to create a poster based on the theme. The interpretation can be as broad, or as narrow as you wish as long as it is inspired by the issues relating to maternal health. You can approach the issues from a social, political or personal angle.

For my shortlisted entry I quoted a proverb from my upbringing, my faith, and my culture. A Hadith as we call it or lessons from the Prophet's life (PBUH) that states "Heaven lies beneath your mother's feet' which was a lesson to teach one about respecting their mothers. As impressionable as I was when I heard this when I was young and not knowing the difference between sayings and fact I tried to look for the pearly gate underneath my mother's foot much to everyone's glee.
I am fortunate to be part of the selected few who were the finalists for this competition and take part in the showcase exhibition as part of International Design week 2013 here in Melbourne.

I was invited to represent Australia in the Exquisite Collective project by Helou Studio. I used Dorothea Mackellar's iconic poem that describes the harsh landscape of Australia that she loves as a starting point.
MY COUNTRY
I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
Of rugged mountain ranges, of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jewel sea,
Her beauty and her terror, the wide brown land for me.
Though earth holds many splendours, wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country my homing thoughts will fly.
Core of my heart, my country, Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine She pays us back three fold.
I love her far horizons, I love her jewel sea,
Her beauty and her terror, the wide brown land for me.
Though earth holds many splendours, wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country my homing thoughts will fly.

Submission for Threadless, I couldn't help myself when I saw the Vintage themed competition. The piece is based on vintage typefaces and ephemera designs. I took the lyrics from a Billy Joel song "The good old days weren't always good and tommorow is not as bad as it seems."Illustration, Typography2012 -
Australia infront is a resource centre for designers and creative types n Australia, and after my move here from Indonesia they did an article on me out of the blue. As an expression of my gratitude for the feature they did on me I made this typographic piece with their site name as the copy.
To say the least it was well received, and they were kind enough to feature the piece on their site http://www.australianinfront.com.au/news/article/presents-infrontIllustration, Typography2012
